Alex Monroe Jewellery is inspired by nature, and the nostalgia of a
childhood spent roaming the Suffolk countryside. Every piece is
conscientiously designed and responsibly handmade in England by
jeweller Alex Monroe, our expert team of makers and skilled long-term
partners. From strong South East London roots, Alex Monroe jewellery
is now much loved worldwide for its unique detail, character and
craftsmanship.
Meet Alex Monroe
Alex Monroe grew up in the 1970’s Suffolk countryside in an old,
crumbling house surrounded by wild, tangled nature. He enjoyed a
childhood rich with freedom and imagination - roaming through
fields, forests and rivers and constantly crafting all sorts of
interesting (and sometimes mildly dangerous) tools and inventions to
accompany him on his adventures!
After moving to London to pursue his dreams of becoming a punk (!)
Alex turned his making skills to jewellery, training at the School
of Art, Architecture and Design. Post graduation, Alex Monroe was
established as a business in 1986 - with the intention of creating
originally designed jewellery, which was made by hand and well
priced. Jewellery made to be worn, loved and treasured - values
which remain unchanged to this day.
Handmade in England
From the design process to the finishing touches, we have been
proudly hand-making jewellery using a mix of traditional and
specifically developed techniques for over 30 years.
Ethically Sourced
We work closely with our suppliers to ensure that we are keeping
any environmental impact to a minimum, whilst positively
contributing to communities. Alongside this, we encourage them to
follow suit, establishing long-term change across the industry.
Reducing Our Carbon Footprint
Carbon has become the headline indicator for climate change, which
is why we have taken ownership of our carbon footprint and are on
a mission to reduce our emissions year on year.
Our Jewellery
Signature Natural Details
Alex Monroe Jewellery is synonymous with a very British sense of
style – slightly quirky, but intended to be worn and loved for a
lifetime. Inspired by the natural world, our pieces are delicate,
detailed, and always handmade in England.Alex MonroeFounder & Creative Director
Our Jewellery
Alex Monroe jewellery has always been designed and made to be
worn, loved and treasured. Every piece tells a story - from the
rescue mission by Alex’s daughters to save an ailing Bumblebee, or
the hypnotic dragonflies flitting around Alex’s beloved Suffolk
countryside to a quirky shrimp, inspired by early memories of
afternoon tea by the sea.
We have been proudly hand-making jewellery using a mix of
traditional and specifically developed techniques for over 30
years. From the design process to finishing touches, all of our
jewellery is handcrafted in England by our in-house team of expert
jewellers, working in tandem with long-standing suppliers.
For special moments, proposals or anniversaries - whatever the
occasion, our brilliant Bespoke Team are expertly placed to work
with you to create heirlooms of the future in solid 18ct gold or
platinum, in Alex’s signature, natural style.

Alex Monroe was established as a business in 1987 - with the
intention of creating originally designed jewellery, which was made
by hand and well-priced. Jewellery made to be worn, loved and
treasured. All of these values remain unchanged to this day.
Alongside this, we are committed to working ethically and sourcing
materials with as little impact on the environment as possible. Our
proactive approach to sustainability is integral to the creation of
our jewellery - we work closely with suppliers to seek out ever more
ethical and sustainable materials, minimise social and environmental
impact - and positively contribute to our community.
The natural world has always been integral to Alex’s designs, so
it is essential that we run the business with the protection of
our planet at the forefront of our minds.
Alex is a huge advocate for keeping traditional skills alive, so
from day one, we have always been committed to making our
jewellery in England. This also gives us a much shorter supply
chain, meaning our carbon footprint will be lower than brands
relying on overseas production. We can also monitor quality
control in a responsive manner, which alongside our in-house
repair service, ensures jewellery is fixed and materials reused
rather than scrapped.
We employ a wonderful team of people across our workshops, head
office and boutiques who all play a part in bringing Alex Monroe
jewellery to life.
Working closely with a small number of suppliers within the
British jewellery industry, we are able to support fellow small
businesses and ensure the ethical treatment of our jewellers and
makers.
But we of course couldn’t do anything without you, our valued
customers! No matter how many years we have been making jewellery,
it is still always a pleasure to hear the stories of how much our
jewellery means to you.
Alex and our design team follow their inspiration wherever it
takes them, so our collections exist outside the world of fast
fashion. We are not guided by trends or the desire for newness, so
this intuitive approach to design combined with our unique detail,
character and craftsmanship means that so many of our customers
speak of their emotional connection to our jewellery. We continue
to challenge the often throwaway nature of modern living and
create pieces to be treasured for a lifetime.
We are proud to support and work closely with communities both
within and outside the jewellery industry to improve supply chains,
grow business and open up opportunities for others. This ranges from
education bodies such as the British Academy of Jewellery and
Goldsmiths, volunteering in our local London borough to supporting
smaller suppliers.
Sunrise Facets Lapidary
After suffering economic collapse in Sri Lanka, our sapphire
supplier Wennick–Lefèvre got in touch with us to see if we would
help support their plan to purchase a power generator for their
stone cutters, Sunrise Facets.
Power cuts were scheduled throughout the island, which meant that
the team were often working from 7pm until midnight.
We are proud to have contributed 50% of the cost of the generator
and that we could not only improve working conditions for the team
but also pull together across the supply chain to support those in
need. We have since visited Sunrise Facets in Sri Lanka, where we
were given an extremely generous and warm welcome.
The first incarnation of the BAJ was born in 1999 after a report
from the department for trade and industry painted a bleak picture
of the jewellery industry; craftspeople were a dying breed with a
lack of new entrants. Having always championed the skills within
the British jewellery industry, working with the BAJ was a natural
step for us. From giving talks, tutorials and individual support
to students, we also collaborated with the Academy on a project
focused on sustainability. For the last two years we have
sponsored an end of year award for Commercial Creativity, and even
employed several BAJ graduates as part of the AM team!
Our AM Helping Hand initiative ensures we support a diverse range
of charities and organisations close to the hearts of our team,
and customers. From collaborations for Great Ormond Street
Hospital and Friends of the Earth to fundraising through bake
sales and half marathons, holding online ‘Spotlight Sales’ to
highlight lesser-known charities, or in response to current world
events. We are proud to have been proactively raising funds for
deserving causes since 2018.
As a company, we will use our position and experience to keep
pushing to make the jewellery industry more open and inclusive, in
whatever ways we can!Alex MonroeFounder & Creative Director
Black Jewellers Elevation Project
In response to feedback from the Black jewellery community about
the challenges, discrimination and racism they faced in the
jewellery industry, we provided sponsorship to support 16 UK based
Black jewellers who became known as the Black Jewellers
Collective. The aim of the project was to progress the careers and
brands of the jewellers, alongside representation in the industry.
We collaborated with SevenSix Agency on a practical training and
support programme in publicity and marketing, culminating in a
Press Preview at Mortimer House in London.
Volunteering
To acknowledge that so many members of the AM team have causes,
charities or projects close to their hearts, all staff have two
paid volunteer days a year available to help where they can. So
far members of the team have offered help in a variety of ways,
from gardening and fundraising at local primary schools, assisting
homeless people towards employment, and checking in with
potentially lonely people for regular chats.
HR
Whilst we design, manufacture and sell beautiful jewellery - we
are really all about people! We employ over fifty people across
the business, several of whom have been a part of the company for
over ten years! Diversity, creativity, and individuality are at
the heart of our values and are reflected in our wonderful team of
people.
